The Axis of Space Time Turning

Residential Apartment Designed by Chien-Neng Chang

The main inspiration for this design came from the idea of the dining room as the central space, with a round table inserted as the focal point. Chien-Neng Chang aimed to blend Eastern and Western design elements, resulting in a dynamic spatial experience. The circular motion planning of the round table, resembling the gears of a clock, adds a sense of movement and energy to the dining area, making it the heart of the home where family gathers.

One of the key features that sets this apartment apart is the use of curved methods to shape the walls and ceilings. Large structural beams and columns in the living room provided the opportunity to create unique curved surfaces, adding a sense of elegance and fluidity to the space. The TV wall, adorned with a beautiful marble cambered surface, also doubles as a study space, seamlessly integrating functionality and aesthetics.

The design specifications for this apartment include a property size of 126 square meters. The use of curved surfaces and thoughtful spatial planning maximizes the available space, creating a comfortable and functional living environment for the residents.

Chien-Neng Chang and the design team, including Yu-Ying Sun, successfully overcame several challenges during the design process. The corridor leading to the private area features bilateral circular walls, creating a smooth transition space reminiscent of an hourglass bottleneck. In the children's room, the ceiling combines a lovely semicircle pendant with the wardrobe, creating a small castle-like space for the daughter. The use of hole plates allows the child to decorate her own world according to her preferences, while also ensuring the safety of the space.

The Axis of Space Time Turning was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, this design contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
